Twin Towns!
Elizabethtown's founders, Barnabas and Elizabeth Hughes, hailed from County Donegal, Ireland - home of Letterkenny. In 2002, Elizabethtown, PA and Letterkenny, Ireland became Sister Cities, due to their historical roots and several similarities between the towns. Both began as market towns, both have institutes of higher education, and at the time, both had candy factories.
Original Memorandum
"A sister city 'Memorandum of Understanding' was signed in November 2002 by government officials of Elizabethtown and Letterkenny at a gala event celebrating Elizabethtown's 175th anniversary. This sister city agreement opens the door for exchanges between the two communities in areas to include government, business, service clubs, education, and other relationships to benefit both communities." *Image source - Elizabethtown Borough Website.
